Babson E-Tower

Babson E-Tower

Babson College, located in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is a private business college which grants BS, MS and MBA degrees. Babson is associated with nearby Olin College, located in Needham, Massachusetts. Olin college, which is smaller, has arranged to share many of Babson's facilities, and students from each college can cross-register to take classes from the other. In the 2003–04 academic year, there were 1,717 undergraduate students and 1,625 graduate students at Babson. Approximately 40 percent of the student body is female and 60 percent male; about 20 percent of the undergraduates and 16 percent of the graduate students are from outside the United States. Babson's "E-Tower" is an alternative housing option for entrepreneur students. Started in 2001, the building is a meeting place for brainstorming sessions, dinners with entrepreneurs, and other activities designed to foster an entrepreneurial community.

Undergraduate program

The undergraduate curriculum integrates business disciplines and liberal arts into foundation, intermediate, and advanced-level courses. All first-year students participate in the Foundation Management Experience (FME), a yearlong immersion into the world of business where student teams create their own for-profit ventures. At the completion of FME, the businesses are liquidated and any profits are donated to a charity of choice. Babson teaches accounting, marketing, finance, management operations, organizational behavior, and economics in one integrated three-semester course, the "Intermediate Management Experience". As part of the Advanced Program, students design their own learning plans, which can consist of upper-level elective courses in liberal arts and management, field-based experiences, and cocurricular activities.

Graduate program

The F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College provides four degree programs intended to cultivate entrepreneurial thinking that students can apply in start-up ventures and the corporate environment. The accelerated one-year, full-time MBA program is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in business and at least two years of post-graduate work experience. The full-time two-year program features a modular curriculum that integrates the functional disciplines of business into one cohesive program. The Evening MBA part-time program provides an integrated learning approach to the key functional areas, which students can immediately apply to their work.

History

Babson College was founded by Roger Babson on September 3, 1919, as the "Babson Institute." It was renamed "Babson College" in 1969.

Babson Globe

The 25-ton, 28 foot diameter Babson Globe is a notable campus landmark. It is the world's second-largest globe that is capable of rotating on its axis. It was built in 1955 and allowed to deteriorate; the facing tiles fell off in 1984, and by 1991 it had the appearance of a rusty sphere. In 1994 it was refurbished.

Wellesley, Massachusetts

Wellesley is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 26,613. It is best known as the home of Wellesley College. The Hunnewell Arboretum abuts the Wellesley campus, and the Elm Bank Horticulture Center is also located in Wellesley. The public education services of the town are well regarded, especially Wellesley High School.

History

Wellesley was originally part of Dedham, Massachusetts, and was subsequently a part of Needham, Massachusetts called West Needham, Massachusetts. It was officially incorporated as a town on April 6, 1881 and is named after its famous women's college, Wellesley College. The college's name is from Horatio Hollis Hunnewell's estate, named for his wife's maiden name of Welles. The town was at one time connected to the Charles River by a private canal. Into the twentieth century, Jews and other minorities were informally blocked from living in certain parts of town. Certain groups such as Italians congregated in separate neighborhoods. Wellesley was home to US District Court Judge Arthur Garrity, who in 1974 ordered the integration of Boston public schools. This led to racial unrest and violence in the city of Boston as well as the picketing of Garrity's Wellesley home.

Local Interest and Culture

The town is informally divided into several sections or neighborhoods, e.g. , Wellesley Square, Wellesley Hills, Wellesley Farms, Wellesley Fells, Wellesley Lower Falls. Wellesley residents receive all major services from their town government, with the exception of actual residential trash pick-up. Residents of Wellesley cart their own refuse to a town-operated multi-use waste recycling site, where items are sorted by type, recyclability and potential reuse. Old books and magazines are available for town residents to take, which have their own shelving section. The program has received international press and is available for tours through Wellesley Town Hall. Wellesley opened its new Town Library building in 2003, which is part of the Minuteman Library System. In addition to Wellesley College, Wellesley is also home to Massachusetts Bay Community College, Babson College and Dana Hall, a preparatory school for girls. While independent, Dana Hall was at one time considered a feeder school to Wellesley College. Wellesley Public Schools are normally among the top scorers for the state's MCAS testing. It should also be stated that while Babson College is often considered to be in Wellesley, it is technically in Babson Park and has its own zip code (02457). Ming Tsai, famous chef and host of East Meets West on the Food Network, owns the restaurant Blue Ginger in Wellesley.

Needham, Massachusetts

Needham is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

History

Needham was first settled in 1680 and was officially incorporated in 1711. Originally part of the Dedham Grant, Needham split from Dedham, Massachusetts and was named after the village of Needham Market in Suffolk, England, a neighbor of the English town of Dedham. By the 1770s settlers in the western part of the town who had to travel a long distance to the meeting house on what is now Central Avenue sought to form a second parish in the town. Opposition to this desire created conflict, and in 1774 a mysterious fire destroyed the extant meeting house. Some time afterwards the West Parish was formed. In 1881 the West Parish was separately incorporated as the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts. The following year, Needham and Wellesley high schools began playing an annual football game on Thanksgiving, the longest running high school football rivalry in the United States. (It was about this time that the basic American football rules which differentiate the game from rugby were established). During the great religious division among churches descended from the Puritan congregations that took place in New England in the late 18th century and early 19th century, the First Parish in Needham became Unitarian, like many others in eastern Massachusetts, following the lead of the divines at Harvard University. Self-defined orthodox Congregationalists had to form a separate church, though for a period they may have attended the church in Dedham which remained Congregationalist.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.9 km² (12.7 mi²). 32.7 km² (12.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.71% water.

Education

Needham is home to Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, chartered in 1997. In the public school system, there are five elementary (Broadmeadow, Eliot, Hillside, Mitchell, and Newman), one middle (Pollard), and one high school (Needham High School) which is now under construction.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 28,911 people, 10,612 households, and 7,778 families residing in the town. The population density is 885.2/km² (2,292.7/mi²). Roger Babson

Roger Ward Babson (July 6, 1875 - March 5, 1967), remembered today largely for founding Babson College in Massachusetts, was an entrepreneur and business theorist who rose to great fame in the first half of the 20th Century. He also founded Webber College, now [http://www.webber.edu Webber International University], in Babson Park, Florida, and the defunct Utopia College, in Eureka, Kansas. He was born to Nathaniel Babson and his wife Ellen Stearns as part of the 10th generation of Babsons to live in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Roger attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked for investment firms before founding, in 1904, Babson's Statistical Organization, which analyzed stocks and business reports. It continues today as Babson-United Investment Reports. On March 29, 1900 , Babson was first married to Grace Margaret Knight. He was the Prohibition Party's candidate for President of the United States in 1940. Election was won by incumbent President Franklin Delano Roosevelt of the Democratic Party. Babson was surpassed by two other unsuccesful candidates:
- Wendell Lewis Willkie of the Republican Party.
- Norman Mattoon Thomas of the Socialist Party of America. Babson also had a quirky side, most notably in his founding of the Gravity Research Foundation in 1948. The Foundation established a research facility in the town of New Boston, New Hampshire after Babson determined that this location was far enough away from the city of Boston, Massachusetts to survive a nuclear attack. Babson was interested in the history of an abandoned settlement near Gloucester known as Dogtown. To provide charitable assistance to unemployed stonecutters in Gloucester during the Great Depression, Babson commissioned them to carve inspirational inscriptions on approximately two dozen boulders in the surrounding area Dogtown Common. The Babson Boulder Trail exists today as a well-known hiking and mountain-biking trail. The inscriptions are clearly visible. The boulders are scattered, not all are on the trail, and not all of the inscriptions face it, making finding them something of a challenge. Samples of some of the two dozen inscriptions include: HELP MOTHER; SPIRITUAL POWER; and LOYALTY. He became a widower in 1956. He was later remarried to Nona M. Dougherty. He was widowed again in 1963.

Craig Benson

Craig Benson (born October 8, 1954) is an American politician and businessman. Benson came to public attention by founding Cabletron Systems, a successful computer-products provider that became one of the largest employers in New Hampshire, and was governor of the state from January 2003 to January 2005.

Biography

Benson was born in New York City in 1954, where in his childhood he struggled with a speech impediment and severe asthma. After receiving a bachelor's degree in finance from Babson College in 1977, Benson attended Syracuse University, graduating with an MBA in 1979. In 1983, Benson started Cabletron Systems. The company went public in 1989, with what was at the time the largest IPO in Wall Street history. It was dissolved into four separate companies (Enterasys Networks, Aprisma Technologies, Riverstone Networks, and Global Network Technology Services) in January 2000. Within months Cabletron sold its manufacturing operation to Flextronics International for $100 million.

Political career

Benson began running for governor of New Hampshire in 2001, promising to use technology and greater efficiency to save money in state government. Benson was elected governor on November 5, 2002 in an open race to succeed the retiring governor, Jeanne Shaheen. In the primaries, Benson spent more than $15 million, most of it his own money, in an effort to defeat former State Senator Bruce Keough and former U.S. Senator Gordon Humphrey to win the Republican nomination, making Benson's victory, in cost per vote, one of the most expensive in American history. In the general election, Benson overwhelmingly defeated Democratic state Senator Mark Fernald, 59 percent to 38 percent. Benson successfully made Fernald's support for a statewide income tax the dominant issue in the race. In the 2004 election, he lost to Democratic challenger John Lynch, only the second time in 78 years that an incumbent New Hampshire governor was denied a second term. A Catholic, Benson and his wife, Denise, have two children.

Chi Omega

Chi Omega (ΧΩ) Fraternity is the largest women's fraternal organization in the world with 300,000 initiates and 170 collegiate chapters. One in every four sorority women is a Chi Omega. It is the second largest women's organization in the United States, second only to the Girl Scouts of the USA. The fraternity's headquarters is located in Memphis, Tennessee.

History

Chi Omega was founded April 5, 1895 at the University of Arkansas by Allie Simonds, Jean Vincenheller, Jobelle Holcombe, Dr. Charles Richardson (an initiate of Kappa Sigma Fraternity), and Ina Mae Boles. In 1915, Chi Omega established its Executive headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky - pioneering the use of office space among all national women's fraternities. The Fraternity's colors are cardinal and straw, the flower is the white carnation, and the mascot is the owl. Chi Omega made the Make-A-Wish Foundation its official philanthropy in 2000. Lexington, Kentucky

Chi Omega Symphony

The Chi Omega Symphony was written by Ethel Switzer Howard, a pledge at Xi Chapter at Northwestern University, in 1904 on the eve of her initiation. It has since been adopted nationally as a symbol of the fraternity, exemplifying the goals to which every Chi Omega aspires. To live constantly above snobbery of word or deed; to place scholarship before social obligations and character before appereances; to be, in the best sense, democratic rather than 'exclusive', and lovable rather than 'popular'; to work earnestly, to speak kindly, to act sincerely, to choose thoughtfully that course which occasion and conscience demand; to be womanly always; to be discouraged never; in a word, to be loyal under any and all circumstances to my Fraternity and her highest teachings and to have her welfare ever at heart that she may be a symphony of high purpose and helpfulness in which there is no discordant note.
